Healthy without Health Insurance

What do you think?

  1. I think it is smart to have a catastrophic plan in place in case of a massive emergency like car accident, etc. But a plan that limits you to conventional medicine men (ah, doctors) no way. They have very poor critical thinking skills & only focus on: 1. drugs 2. surgery 3. "You're mental. There is nothing wrong with you."

Not where i want to go for "health" care.

  2. What do I think? I think that guy needs to find his tripod! This video makes me dizzy!

Seriously... I think that efforts toward having a nourishing and nutritious diet, as well as maintaining at least a fairly active lifestyle are a wise investment in long-term health.

Of course, our lives are ultimately in the Father's hands and He is our true source of "insurance". Our days are numbered and while we do all we can to keep healthy and have faith that God will take care of us, it is His will whether we struggle with sickness or are blessed with health throughout our lives.

Personally, I haven't had health insurance since I stopped teaching in the public school system in June of 2006. When people find out, they are surprised... and usually frown upon the fact. During the last four years, I've visited the dentist (I think?), eye doctor and naturopathic clinic once each. Thankfully, I haven't needed medical care beyond a new prescription for glasses. (Can't remember for sure about the dentist.)

God willing, after I become a permanent resident here in Ontario, I will be able to use the governmental health care system. Helpful because I need to start seeing a midwife soon. :)

By the way... no surprise here - natural childbirth is much less costly than prenatal care and delivery at a medical hospital. However, once I'm a resident, midwifery services are completely funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Well, really they are funded by the very high taxes of citizens and residents! Can't worry about it too much, though, because this is the way things are here and, again, provision is from my Heavenly Father.

  3. Kathryn,

I would agree with you completely, that having a catastrophic plan or a fund is critical.

In my family, we do have health insurance, but not the traditional kind. We are apart of a Christian Sharing program called Samaritan Ministries. www.samaritanministries.org I would highly recommend it to anyone. It is a wonderful way to be a blessing to other Christian family every month.

P.S. If any of you readers happen to sign up, make sure to mention my last name. : )

    Jenna,

You are right about that tripod. Just close your eyes and listen... : )

Amen to everything you said. The Lord is our protector and provider, and our trust must be in Him.

You asked what I thought. I guess I can agree with the video in theory, but when I think about a family like mine, that has a few children : ), as apposed to the folks in the video with their one 20 year old, I think that some (emphasis on some) insurance is necessary in the day and age in which we live.

    Any other thoughts?

  4. FYI

Samaritan is not insurance. It is a sharing program as you mentioned. But that is exactly what it is. Sharing. We have all promised to share in the needs of each other, and we do. And that is why it works. Plus obviously the good framework and order that Samaritan itself has put together.

We have been members for 8 or so years.

As I recall we have used it mainly for broken bones. Yours. 3 arms and one finger. Go figure!

ps. I like your blog. You make me laugh.

  5. Benjamin, I like your mom - she makes me laugh too!

I really enjoy your blog. I am at the point where I'm nearly rabid at all of the "ask your doctor if you need this drug" commercials and very dismayed that we have allowed drug companies to frighten us into thinking we need to take dozens of drugs to be healthy -yikes! Even the doctors believe this bunk (or pretend they do to keep you coming back). Finding blogs like yours and the information it provides is very encouraging.

Thank you and keep up the good work!
